Crete is the first Greek island that
decided to implement a programe
titled «Crete:12 months of
tourism ».
The island provides many luxurious
hotel chains that can operate
through out the year.The climate
of the island is warm even in
winter,while the natural,historic
and cultural inheritance of Crete is
unique.
Tourism industry in Crete decided
to use funds made available by the
European Union and materialize
investments in tourism
infrastructure and the cultural
sector.
The two main goals of the
programe were:
– The short--term development of
the tourism sector through out
the year
– Reinforcing the island''s
relationship with foreign tourists,
mostly through the promotion of
special activities.
During the implementation of the
programe the industry succeeded in:
– Attracting a large number of
hotels that will participate in this
effort
– Attracting tourists with special
interests
– Ensuring the operation of certain
tourism shops through winter
time
– Providing competitive prices
– Supporting the program through
advertising campaigns
A similar programme was
implemented in Rhodes during last
years,while Corfu is expected to
follow quite soon.
The development of tourism during
winter in Greece is heavily
depended on the state sectors
support.The high cost of
development discourages some
regions in implementing relative
programs.
The Greek tourism policy's priority
though should be the development
of winter tourism.
