Beaches around Iraklion

 Around Iraklion there are numerous beaches,accessible by the public,with numerous facilities for the visitors:
Agia Pelagia is on the north coast of Crete, 15 kilometers west of Iraklion city. It has a long beach with wonderful golden sand and white sand in some places. Is a preferred resort area conveniently located close to Iraklion by both locals and visitors. Accommodation facilities of all ranks, taverns, cafes, bars and great nightlife add more value to this already exceptional resort area.
Linoperamata Located on the north coast of Iraklion , 6 kilometers west of the city of Iraklion. It has fine sand and clean waters and offers various facilities and a camping site located behind the beach. Linoperamata has been awarded by the EU Blue Flag for its clean sand and sea. Accommodation, food & beverage facilities are located in the surrounding area. Amoudara The fine beach of Amoudara is located in the Gulf of Iraklion, 5 kilometers west of Iraklion, on the north coast. It has soft golden sand and crystal-clear water. More than 430 beaches have been certified in Greece this year for their high standards in means of environment and facilities-services,with the blue flag.
The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation consisting of national member organisations representing 38 countries in Europe, Africa, Oceania and America.
The award of a European Blue Flag beach is based on compliance with 27 criteria covering the aspects:
1) Water Quality
2) Environmental Education and Information
3) Environmental Management
4) Safety and Services

A unique exhibit of art is at the Historical Museum of Crete in Iraklion.
El Greco,(1541-1614). Cretan-born painter, sculptor, and architect who settled in Spain and is regarded as the first great genius of the Spanish School. He was known as El Greco (the Greek), but his real name was Domenikos Theotocopoulos; and it was thus that he signed his paintings throughout his life, always in Greek characters, and sometimes followed by Kres (Cretan).

A passenger seaplane arrived in Iraklion Port as part of the campaign AirSea lines has started visiting ports around Greece. The aircraft is a De Havilland Twin-Otter on floats,carrying 18 passengers. It is a new way of Transportation especially for the needs of the Aegean& Ionian Islands of Greece.

 The Bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) is one of the rarest raptors in Europe. It inhabits exclusively high mountainous areas (500-4,000 m). It can be found usually above the tree line, in mountainous areas with steep slopes and in alpine pastures.
